ThermalRight SK6 Vs the Cool Innovations Pin HSF's
|
|
Now that we know what we are testing, lets see what we are testing it on!
|
|
The testing core is a Duron 800Mhz at 1Ghz @ 1.85Vcore on an Abit KT7E. Its using the Under the Core Extech Thermal probe and has been "doped" in Dow
Corning 340 Heatsink Compound. Its a Dielectric so I don't need to worry about it harming the thermocouple.
Via the Radiate application the Core puts out 50.3 watts at that Vcore and speed. The CPU doesn't look to bad for being mounted about 100 times with different blocks and HSF's does it? Details on the Under the core thermal probe can be found here.
If this setup sounds familiar, that's cause it is if you have read the "RoundUp Overview" for the largest Waterblock roundup ever done on the web.
Its in production now and will be for the coming weeks. This review will show you what you can expect for thermal data and test sets for the waterblock roundup.

The "Crucible" is where I am running this, but the Cooling system is not doing anything for this. The System specs for the testing rig are:

After every mounting and remounting of the HSF's The thermal paste will be cleaned from the top of the core and from the block and a new application
will be put on. We are using all ASII and all from the same batch.

Test Script
|
|
|
|
|
The testing script will be the Test parameters used to bench each HSF. These consist of timing of events, and sequence of events.
|
|
|
|
Sequence of Events:
- (T+0)Data Logging begins - Start Point
- (T+10sec) Testing machine is powered up and left to idle ( pre heat)
- (T+7:10Min) Testing machine initiates CPU LOAD testing for 7 Min. ( Heat Up
- (T+14:10Min) CPU LOAD test ends CPU is left to run at idle for 7 Min. ( Cool Down)
- (T+21:10Min) Data Logging Ends.

The total time it takes to test a block is 21 min for 1 test set. Each block will be tested 6 times. 3 times with the Delta 38CFM and 3 times with
the Sunon 26CFM.
The results will be averaged. The tests will be valid as long as the Ambient intake air doesn't vary by more then 10DegF for more then 1 min. ( a cold or warm draft wont affect the long term test result, but a continued increase/decrease will.)
3 Temps will be recorded for each HSF.
T1 - Ambient T2 - CPU Core T1-T2 The Delta between Core/Ambient. The most Significant temp is T1-T2 as it will handicap the temps properly for any variation of the ambient temp. All 3 temps will be used to figure in the results.
Data Logging and results gathering is happening on an independent machine so the logging does not interfere with the CPU LOAD temp testing.

The CPU heat load testing, was done with the "CPU Stability Test v6" which offers a CPU warming facility. From testing it heats the core just
as well as anything else ( Folding, Prime, etc...).
It also offers a timer and stuff that made it easy to use in this test.

This is a pic of the other PC monitor that was doing the data capture. Ignore the Matrox Marvel TV thing going on.... what a guy cant watch
M*A*S*H while doing HSF testing?!

The test setup looked like this. The ambient probe read the air going right in over the blades. While the UnderCore probe read the core
temps.
