Dynatron/Vantec/ThermalRight shootout By: Joe

Because of how many tests, and data sets I had for each HSF, I have gone to a slightly new format for the graphing and results listing.  If you have any complaints or suggestions about how this is arranged, please let me know.

For those who don't care about the specifics and details about the HSF results can click here to go to the who won/lost.

The Aftermath -

Dynatron Aluminum MicroFins® DC1206BM-L

First test run was with the stock Blue Top fan.

The "SF" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

The first test of the DC1206BM-L was as I expected.  For an Aluminum HSF it did very impressive.  On an almost 100 watt Core, most Al. HSF's would have long since given up and overheated. This is especially common with the small 10mm thick fans. The TOP fan is not too weak though.  At 24CFM it can move some air.  The main drawback for the fan is the low back pressure which means it has a hard time pushing air all the way down though the fins.  I expect to see a nice improvement with a Delta.

The Delta 7200RPM Test

The "Delta" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

This test really impressed me.   The temps went from better than average Al. temps to almost good Cu HSF temps. In the graph you can see the wonderful inaccuracy of the mobo prove at work with it showing that it was going cooler than the intake air thermocouple.   The reason the intake air gets warmer with the load portion is the heat around the HSF increases with the hot air it throws off.  This is where the internal airflow of your case comes into play when you are designing a cooling system.  This is also why reading the intake temp is more important than the Ambient room temp.

The Backwards Delta 7200RPM Test

Pic is from the Cu test as I don't have a pic of the Al. test

The "Delta BW" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

This test was unique as it tests my theory on air flow around the HSF on a cramped board ( or a mobo that has its socket in the same position as the KT7A does. ).  To read the intake temp I have the probe alone one of the HSF sides about 2 - 3 CM away. It read and performed as I expected.  The Intake temp barely at all went up more than 1 deg with this method. But it also showed a lower effectiveness on this type of HSF. The temp remained more steady, but because of how dense the fins are it hurt the performance a little. Just FYI, the Delta noise maker is quieter when run in this direction.

Dynatron Copper MicroFins® DC1206BM-P

Stock Blue Top Fan

The "SF" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

As with the BM-L stock fan test, this one also was as expected.  The temps were good, and a bit below where I thought they were going to end up.  The "Top" fan is nice, but I think the fin density is stopping it from doing more on this HSF.  Overall I was happy with this run.

Stock Blue Top Fan

The "Delta" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

This run started out with the CPU higher above ambient than normal.  The initial temp of the core is not an issue as a 10 min period is given for the CPU temp to stabilize. Putting a Delta 7200 RPM fan on this HSF really made it shine.  The Delta has a high back pressure which allows it to force air through all the high density fins.  At 58.7 it performed right around where some of the lower end water blocks I have in the WB roundup are scoring which is impressive.

The Backwards Delta 7200RPM Test

The "Delta BW" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

With the Delta fan backwards in the same setup as the BM-L tests, we saw an IMPROVEMENT in the temp.  The reason is simple, since the hot air was blowing out the top of the HSF, it was sucking in cool air constantly from the sides. This gives a much more flat and stable temp curve. With the Delta running like normal, the heat can build up around the core and cause the hot air to be sucked back in the fan and raising the overall temp of the cpu.   The peak temp and end temp were both lower than the normal fan position run, but overall this test averaged a higher temp due to the sustained 58.1Deg temps for the duration of the test.  The BM-L was already running fairly warm so there was less of an effect with turning the fan over Vs the improvement on this test.

Dynatron Copper e-CPU Cooler DY1206BH-625

Stock Delta 7200RPM
Test

The "Delta" in the model name stands for Standard Fan in the tests, just something I used to keep track of them.

I was almost sure this HSF was going to walk away with the win in this, but I guess I was pretty wrong.  62.1C for a peak temp is not a bad temp at all ( in relation to the other results), but its also not that great. The HSF's nice thick Cu base provided a nice stable and smooth temp curve though.  The 3 Prong Socket clip is worth its weight in gold to people who have broke one of their lugs off, and that needs to be considered when looking at this HSF.  It comes stock with a Delta 7200RPM. because of the fans structure I think this HSF will benefit more from the fan reversed than the others.

A nice improvement from reversing the fan. The HSF's greater mass than the other HSF's give it the nice flat and more "controlled" heat up/cool down than the smaller lighter HSF's.   I do like this HSF a lot, I do wish it would have scored higher as it looks to be very nicely engineered.  People looking for a nice HSF that has 3 lug holes, this is about the only one on the market!
