Project : Double Header II - Chilling it down

Waiting for the prefect time, and Parts to come in-

Well after getting all this stuff done and letting everything cure and settle in.  I ran it a few times to make sure it worked but never more then a few min because I was lacking a 12amp 12v PS I ordered. But then, as if it was a sign, in late march... it snowed. Most hard-core OC'rs know what days are good OC'n days and pay more attention to the weather service then most weather men on TV.   Well after a few days of 75 - 80 deg's and sunny, this 30 deg, wet, cloudy, snowy day was like a gift, one last serious OC'n day of the season was here. This is the weather here in WI though, we can have 80 one day, and 20 with snow the next.

On my way to work

The field outside my work

After enduring a day at work, I remembered I still didn't have my second PS for the pelts. I was going to go out and just pick up a 300watt AT PS and use that, but when I get home.. there is a present waiting for me from Santa UPS.  Its my PS! What a day its gonna be :)

It isn't the PS I thought I was getting, but it will do :)

With all the parts in place -
Had the radiator in front of 2 window fans at high, cooling the CPU's/pelts down to 50degF without any pelts being turned on. Let everything chill down, then I powered the pelts and left them cook for a good 15min. The air around the radiator was at 45Deg F before the pelts were activated, but jumped to 52 once they were. The chips immediately fell to a temp to low for the onboard temp sensor to read in bios even when clocked to 605 Mhz @ 2.3v.

Around the inside of the system I could feel that the mobo was darn cold around the CPU's. I was starting to get worried about condensation around the cpu socket on top of the board.

The extra PS got pretty hot in back, so in order to keep it from doing a thermal shutdown (cause I was pulling 100% off it, and that was exceeding the duty rating for the time I was doing it for). so I set a lil box fan I had blowing down it to keep it from going critical on me.

Now came the moment of truth, if I could OC it anymore, then the 605 I was getting with just water cooling.

sorry for the bad image...

Well 682Mhz was a nice speed to be able to post and ALMOST boot at.  I think I hit the limit of the silicon.  I was not able under any way boot all the way at this speed. :(  I had the CPU chilled down to -15deg C (booted at a stable speed to read it). But it just wouldn't fly.  So I let it chill some more (as the night went on the temp outside dropped more).  Then I wanted to shoot to at least post a the real speed I was going after - 733Mhz.

To get these 366's to post @ 733 I needed to let the CPUs chill down to below -20degC  to get that I put another fan on the radiator to let it pull more heat off. and let the system sit powered down for a few min. I could get it to post but at the UDMA66 bios screen the video card would freak. I needed to use a PCI card cause my G200 would bomb at 133Mhz.  I know its not a boot, so 733 doesn't matter much, but still the fact I was able to get a 366 to post @ 2x its normal speed is impressive I think. It ran all the other CPU speeds below 685Mhz solid as a rock and below 0degC.  All in all I think it was a success for a project.

I am already planning Double Header III - SMP CuMines @ over 1Ghz. Gonna be a while though :) Please email me or post to the Forum of you have any ideas or comments about this article!
