Pro/Mini Rev 2 - Lan Box Revisited By: Joe

Pro/Mini - Rev.2

Pro/Mini Rev 1

Pro/Mini Rev 2

The Difference is quite subtle in space usage and all. The Coolant is a different color due to me adding a drop of dye lite to the coolant mix so if I put in a Neon I can get some glowing action with ease :)

I also finally cleaned up some of the misc. wires with Split loom and wire wrap. I moved the Chipset thermal probe to the side to allow more of the surface on top to cool.

The conditions for this test were:

Idle - Machine was booted and let at the desktop for 1 hour, to allow temps to level out at their normal levels.  No power management was enabled or used during the idle period.

Load - Ran the Distributed Networks RC5 Client, and ran Mad Onion - 3Dmark 2000 in a demo loop for 2 hours. CPU was at 100% use for all 2 hours. No cooling software or power management was used.

Temps were taken at random times throughout the tests to see if ambient varied at all, Temps did move by up to 5 Deg but at the time the temps were taken the ambient temp was stable at its temp for around 30 min.  All temps were converted into C to give a lil better accuracy.

Conclusion -

Was it worth it?

Well the machine gained no performance in computing power or anything. But it does run a bit cooler and the CPU DOES seem to be more stable at 1037Mhz @1.95Vcore. The real goal of this was preparation for changing the Board and CPU to a Socket A/ Via 133A chipset board.  To cool a big Tbird with a pelt will exert almost 200+watts of heat.   The 4x4" radiator would not be able to handle that much heat.  The Black Ice would be able to handle 200 watts with no problem.

Also it allowed me to go and clean up some stuff I wanted to do initially on the system with the wires.

The Temps for the machine really didn't drop at idle any more then it would with the old cooler, but under a load you can definitely see how we hit the cooling threshold for where the stacked plate radiator was only effective to a point. You can also see how the Black Ice never was overwhelmed and keep the system more then 50% cooler in some cases.

Only thing left to get is a sound card, gunna pick up a Phillips Acoustic Edge sound card for it.
