Pro/Mini - The Uber Lan Box - Wrap Up and Benches

Wrap Up

Now.. Lets see how fast it can go.

Overall the machine was cheap to make. It cost me about 500 - 600$ total to build which isn't that bad. Most of the hardware I had and was not needed. But the hardware was what made the machine fly and in some cases blow.

Hardware used in this machine:

First of all the CPU sucked, plain and simple. This was a normal pick, no special hand pic cC0 Core Costa Rica 850. But I was hope'n that I could get it to 1Ghz atleast. I hacked around in the BIOS.  After a day of work I was able to get it to 995 at 1.90Vcore.. and it wasn't that stable.. :( so I left it alone at the Lan.

Once I got home I worked on OC'n it and got it to 1037Mhz! at 1.90Vcore and just by pure luck it seems.   ( it says 1033.42, but in the Bios it is at 122Mhz FSB) Under W2K I was rocking.. But..

I got sick of dismal 3d Performance with this POWERHOUSE video card. Here is the 3DMark I got under W2K with the VisionTek GeForce 2 Ultra with the Det3 latest W2K beta's. ( 6.72)

There is NO REASON a 1033( I still say 37) Mhz P3 CPU with 256mb Ram, and the fastest video card being made - the GeForce 2 Ultra.

 3932 3D Mark?!  That's WEAK!

So the Night I started this write up I loaded Windows 98SE and loaded all the goods to test under Windows 98SE.  I am using the Det3 6.77 Beta's, Dx8a, and all the exact same hardware.

Now this was A LOT better. almost 8000 in 3Dmark with only a 122Mhz FSB was nice. But the real magic in how this score got so high is still to come

7905 3D Mark, thats More Like it!

A Grouping of Sandra pic's are below. Its an older Sandra, but it works :) it does make the 1Ghz seem very fast though doesn't it? :) hehehehehehe

CPU

Memory

Media

The most impressive component of this system was the VisionTek GeForce2 Ultra. I remember seeing Kyle Bennett of HardOCP posting that he got his card ( same make) to also top out and be error free.

Well this one will do 2D at full bore 315/550 on the card with ALL STOCK AIR COOLING!

in 3D the Ram can only make it to 545 but the core can stay at 315!!!

This card is Freak'n amazing!  at 315Mhz the core in a 3Dmark loop for 30 min only gets to 110DegF ( taken on the backside with a RayTek MT4 IR Gun.)

There's a Reason VisionTek is building some cards for other Mfg's ( Elsa), it's cause they really know how to make a stable board.

Cant wait to get another one of these to OnDaEdg to setup his Pelt cooler on the ram and core.

For CPU Temps They came down to this:

The core gets to 10DegC in an 80Deg Ambient environment running CS or something that taxes 100% of the CPU constantly.

at idle its a TOTALLY different story:

Minus 16C..  :) that's at idle in Windows, but still pretty damn cold.  This RadioShack 130watt Pelt is only running at around 90 - 100 watts at 12v and the core at 1034Mhz and 1.90Vcore -16.1 at idle isn't too bad is it? :)

In most apps it never gets over 5 - 6 Deg C

Well in closing I would like to thank all the folks and companies that helped out, this is now one of the baddest systems for Lan game'n you can get.  With the AMD Chip and Board that is going in it next I will hopefully get some better CPU speeds instead of the weak 850 @ 1034Mhz score.

This entire project is built on AOpen gear.  Its an AOpen case, Aopen Mobo, and an AOpen DVD.  Major props to them!  They are make'n some incredibly stable and just overall robust products. They may not be the absolute OC'rs dream but they are close.

The GeForce2 Ultra they sent is prime quality. I am still in awe at the speeds it runs at, and how incredible the video speed is.  Nvidia has made a great chip for VisionTek to exploit and drop the hammer on.

Cole at Case Etc has put up with my BS and that alone deserves a medal or something :).  They are the place I went right away to get the supplies for hacking yer case apart and cooling it!

Todd at CoolerGuys is another guy who has put up with me too much.   He has got the perfect complements to your case mod'n adventure it seems.  The rounded IDE cables and the Arctic Silver we used worked out great.

Ahh my good friend Chip at OCWC hooked me up with the Block, Cold plate, radiator, pump and a nice load of advice.  He also took the brunt of my anger when the leak happened.  and he didn't even tell me to go to hell!!!!  I am amazed.. I woulda if I was him :)

See ya in the next project, not sure what it will be, but I am sure I can find something :) What ever it is, it will involve one or 2 AMD's.
