Letting the Fans Blow Freely -
|

As it was the biggest disappointment to me how Addtronics chokes their fans, I had to do something about that. So one night with my Nibbler, my Drill, and lotsa Band-Aids, I went at the case and didn't look back.

This was the first victim.... this is supposed to cool hard drives!!! How the hell can it do that with a opening for a 80mm or smaller fan? It can't so we are going to make the hole a lil bigger.
Since I didn't want to drill into my table I am using a dead floppy as a block to drill on ( so I don't eat my carpet.)

After much drilling, and eating away with my nibbler at it, I cleaned it out nicely. I wanted to open it up more just didn't have the time. I would like to still put it under a drill press and take a nice round 4" bit ( with cutting oil :p) and open it up into a nice round opening. But as it is, its increased the air flow from a mild breeze to a nice wind.

Don't let the looks fool ya, it works DAMN good. now I get A LOT of air.
As I said before in the future I will just take the saber saw to it and open it up fully, but for a quick fix, this did numbers. I cleaned up all the sharp jaggies before doing anything else.

These fans had a serious case of asphyxiation, I was getting a gentle breeze from them both.... that's sad for 2 92mm fans. I have 1 40mm that was able to move more air!
So lets bust out the 3/8" bit ( I think it was 3/8" ) and drill the mutha out. ( notice there are no fans behind the grill, make sure of that before doing this :)

If you haven't had a chance to just go ape sh*t on your PC, and drill a load of holes in it, you have to try it... its so stress relieving.

My lil 300watt AT PSU had a die'n fan, and was just in need of being able to move its air better. So we cut off the bad fan, and then we busted out the nibbler, and the tin snips.

Once I got the entire cage off, I cleaned it up with the nibbler ( the snips and the nibbler are at the bottom of the picture)
