Double Header 3 By: Joe

Project: Double Header 3 Step 1 - OverView

Welcome To The Machine

What is DH3?

If you have read the previous Double Header Articles on ProCooling you will know that this is no normal double header setup.  The Last machines dealt more with the hardware it was cooling almost more then the hardware I was using to cool it.  Well that's taken a HUGE leap in the other direction. I wanted to build a machine that was independent of any hardware config in it, and would be able to cool anything I throw at it with a minimal change to the machine..

Also the fact I see all around people pedaling the thought that you cant do serious cooling with stuff you can buy from Walmart and Ace Hardware. This is what I am coining as a "Practical" yet extreme cooling system. Its not terribly out there, yet its very durable, robust and more versatile then any Vapo Phase will ever be.

Its also my new LAN Box. Look for it attending  ( with me ) local LANs in your area once I get some hardware in it.  At a total weight of over 87Lbs, its going to be damn hard to move to a LAN, but oh well :)

DH1/DH2 Vs DH3 Comparison Chart

Boy that's sad isn't it :) Dh3 has greater numbers then both DH1 and DH2 put together in most cases. The Hose part is not that different but that's because DH1 and Dh2 had external cooling systems that ran all over the place. Enough of dwelling on the old systems, lets talk some more bout this gem.

How Much it Cost??

Honestly its impossible for me to know exactly what it cost. I made SO MANY trips for 5$ worth of stuff then 20$ worth of stuff... Radio Shack, Ace Hardware, WalMart, and Home Depot were to credit for most of my spending sprees.  But I can break it down a lil from looking at my check book statement.

How Much DH3 cost?

Parts

Over 500$

Electrical stuff ( solder, shrink tubing, tape)

75$

I used 8 packages of shrink tubing, and a lot of other such stuff.

Mounting hardware

50$

Zip Tie's and Zip tie mounts. I used over 300 Zip Ties in this project.

Electronics

45 - 50$

Switches, lamps and about 200ft of wire spools.

Coolant

5$

Water wetter + Distilled water

About 1200$ ( Taking the middle $ of the ones that are a range)

Now I bet you want some pic's of what 1200$ can buy you and not even get to buying any computer hardware yet! Well here are a list of pic's of DH3, all the stuff will be explained in the following sections of the article. ( I limited the size so I didn't kill the modem users :)

OK I will answer a few questions right away about these pics.

  1. The Machine is done to the point where the real PC hardware can be put in. The Mobo in the pic is my old BP6 and was just being used for size purposes.
  2. OK the grape Deluge in the bottom pic..  is really not there to the naked eye. My camera is hyper sensitive to UV.. and the black lights throw it off. But ever segment of hose SHOULD look lit up like Green Neon ( like the pic below).  Silicone reflects UV real well and basically my camera couldn't see the UV Dye in the coolant..  Read more into the article to figure out the whole dye thing. :)
  3. There are No water blocks shown cause the the blocks and all will be put together and setup for the hardware I put in. That's the beauty of this machine I can just snap on a water block and go.

Now go on and read about all the parts in this machine.
